Amalfi Coast by Land: Bus, Driver or Ferry from Sorrento?
Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read
The Amalfi Coast road is spectacular and constrained. One lane in each direction, town traffic and busy stops mean a short distance does not promise a short journey. The right transport is the one whose weakness you can tolerate.
Public bus: cheapest, least predictable
The bus makes sense for a single destination and a traveller who can wait. It is poor for trying to collect Positano, Amalfi and Ravello in one day. Queues do not guarantee a seat, and standing on bends is tiring. Buy the correct ticket before boarding and check the current operator timetable; seasonal traffic can turn a neat plan into missed connections.
Its strength is flexibility on a modest budget. Leave early, choose one town and treat a second as a bonus. Do not build the day around the final possible return.
Guided road tour: three places without the admin
The Positano, Amalfi and Ravello coast tour starts at €115, lasts eight hours and has 1,670 reviews. It is the strongest road option in the Sorrento selection by review count. You gain coordinated transport and all three stops; you lose control of how long to stay.
This format is useful when Ravello matters, because it sits above the ferry route. It is less attractive if your ideal day is three hours over lunch in Positano. Read the meeting-point and pickup wording carefully: a tour “from Sorrento” may use a central pickup rather than every hotel.
Private driver: control at a price
A driver lets you start early, change the emphasis and avoid bus queues. It does not make traffic disappear, and vehicle access does not remove the steep walking inside Positano. Agree in writing on duration, included stops, waiting time, parking and overtime. Prices vary too much to state safely without a specific quote.
Ferry: the traffic escape
Seasonal ferries turn the coast into the view and avoid road congestion. They are the cleanest choice for Positano and Amalfi, but not Ravello, and sailings may be changed by weather. Check the operating day and last return directly with the ferry company.
For most first-time visitors who want all three headline towns, the guided road tour is the coherent choice. For Positano and Amalfi only, use a ferry or the boat-trip comparison. For one town on a low budget, take the bus and leave margin. See all formats on our Amalfi Coast tours page.
