Capri from Sorrento by Boat: Blue Grotto and Island Time

Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read

A small excursion boat passing pale limestone cliffs above clear blue water off Capri

Capri looks close from Sorrento, but the useful question is not whether you can reach it in a day. It is how you divide that day between the coast, the Blue Grotto and the island itself. The most-reviewed Capri option in our Sorrento selection makes the trade-off unusually clear: a small-boat circuit, snorkelling and four hours of free time ashore.

What the boat day actually contains

The exclusive Capri boat trip with optional Blue Grotto starts at €119.20, lasts five to eight hours and has 5,421 reviews. It is the most-reviewed Sorrento excursion in the current selection. The range in duration matters: pickup arrangements, the sea and waiting around Capri can all change the day.

Four hours ashore is enough for one coherent plan: Capri town and the Gardens of Augustus, or Anacapri and Monte Solaro. It is not enough to cover both villages leisurely, add a long lunch and queue for several attractions. Decide before landing; otherwise much of the free time disappears in buses, funicular queues and indecision.

Why the Blue Grotto is optional

“Optional” does not mean a guaranteed add-on. The entrance is controlled locally and can close when swell makes the low opening unsafe. Even on a bright day, the sea at the entrance can be unsuitable. When it is open, queues of small rowing boats can consume a significant part of the schedule.

Book the day for Capri, not solely for the grotto. Ask the operator whether the entrance fee is included, how a visit affects the four hours ashore, and what happens if it is closed. A truthful answer is better than a promise nobody on a Sorrento booking desk can make.

Boat tour or ferry

A ferry is transport: it maximises independent time on Capri and lets you choose an available return. A boat trip is the coastal experience: Faraglioni views, coves and swim stops are part of the point, but the timetable belongs to the group. Travellers who want museums, walking and a long lunch usually benefit from the ferry. Travellers who care most about seeing the island from the water get more from the excursion.

Sea conditions also change the comfort level. Small boats give close coastal views but move more than ferries. If you are prone to seasickness, speak to a pharmacist before travelling and check the cancellation terms rather than assuming calm water.

The practical choice

Take the earliest suitable departure if your priority is time ashore. Carry water, sun protection and shoes suitable for steep lanes. Keep enough margin to reach the meeting point; the boat cannot redesign the whole group’s return around one late passenger.

For most first-time visitors who want both a coastal circuit and meaningful island time, the named small-boat trip is the balanced choice. If the Blue Grotto is the only reason you are going, postpone the decision until the operator can confirm that day’s conditions. Compare the wider range on our Capri tours from Sorrento page.
