Naples from Sorrento: Old Town, Catacombs and Pizza in One Day
Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read
Naples rewards focus and punishes a checklist. From Sorrento, one day can comfortably hold the historic centre, one major sight and a proper meal. Adding the waterfront, catacombs, archaeological museum and every famous church creates a transport exercise rather than a city visit.
Train or ferry
The Circumvesuviana links Sorrento with Napoli Piazza Garibaldi and continues to Napoli Porta Nolana. It is usually the practical choice for the historic centre because you are not dependent on sea conditions. It is a local railway: expect basic comfort, busy carriages and no reason to treat your ticket as a reserved seat.
Seasonal ferries offer a calmer arrival at Molo Beverello, useful for the waterfront and the Spanish Quarter. They can be changed or cancelled by weather and do not always match a full sightseeing day. Check the operator’s timetable for your exact date and keep the train as the fallback.
A route that fits
From Piazza Garibaldi, begin with the old centre around Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali. Choose one interior such as Cappella Sansevero, Naples Cathedral or Santa Chiara rather than queueing for all three. Timed attractions should be booked on their own official site.
Pizza is not a separate expedition: choose a place along your route, accept that famous addresses may have queues and keep a second option nearby. The city’s value lies as much in streets, courtyards and small churches as in one restaurant.
The National Archaeological Museum pairs especially well with a previous visit to Pompeii or Herculaneum. The Catacombs of San Gennaro are farther from the old-centre route and work better as the day’s main booked sight, with transport planned around the entry time. Trying to do both usually means rushing each.
What to leave out
Do not add Vesuvius or Pompeii to this day. Each deserves its own time, and Sorrento already has simpler departures for the archaeological sites. Our Pompeii and Vesuvius guide explains that separate choice.
For a first Naples day, take the train, walk the historic centre, reserve one major sight and return before fatigue turns the final connection into a chore. Choose the ferry only when the sailing itself and the waterfront arrival are part of the appeal. For other days beyond Sorrento, browse our things to do in Sorrento page.
