Ravello from Sorrento: A Half-Day Above the Amalfi Coast

Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read

Terraced gardens and stone balustrades overlooking the blue sea from Ravello

Ravello sits above the coast rather than beside it. That distinction shapes the whole day: ferries do not reach the town, the final approach is by road, and the reward is a quieter historic centre with gardens looking over the sea.

Two gardens, two different visits

Villa Rufolo is the more central choice, close to Piazza Duomo. Its terraces, towers and gardens work well when a tour leaves limited free time. Villa Cimbrone is farther from the square along pedestrian lanes and is best known for the Terrace of Infinity. The walk is part of the visit, but it includes slopes and uneven paving.

Trying to rush both villas, lunch and the cathedral into a short stop misses Ravello’s main pleasure. With about an hour, choose Villa Rufolo and the square. With a genuine half-day, add Villa Cimbrone and leave time for the walk. Check opening times and admission directly with each villa, particularly outside the main season.

Getting there from Sorrento

Independent travel normally means reaching Amalfi by ferry or bus and changing to a road service uphill. A missed connection can consume the time saved by travelling independently. A car does not solve the narrow roads or limited parking, so Ravello is not a good reason to rent one for a single day.

The Positano, Amalfi and Ravello coast tour starts at €115, lasts eight hours and has 1,670 reviews. It removes the connections, but divides the day among three towns. The guided Positano, Amalfi and Ravello tour starts at €98.10, lasts eight to nine hours and has 587 reviews. Compare the stated free time in Ravello, not merely the list of stops.

Who should choose Ravello

Ravello suits travellers who value gardens, architecture and views more than beach time. It is less suitable for anyone who wants a flat visit: the centre is pedestrian-friendly but not level, and historic villas contain steps. Ask each venue to confirm current access if mobility is limited.

For most visitors based in Sorrento, a guided road day is the dependable choice when Ravello must share the day with Positano and Amalfi. Travel independently only when Ravello itself is the priority and you can allow generous connection time. Compare the options on our Amalfi Coast tours from Sorrento page.
